"War on Sound" performed by the Moonbabies is one of my favorite new tracks of the year. Synched at the end of Owner Of A Lonely Heart, the composition is a delicious combination of lush beauty and jaunty pop that I often associate with bands from the Midwest. And although the label is Midwestern (Hidden/Parasol based in Champaign,IL) the band is Scandinavian. A duo comprised of Ola Frick and Carina Johansson, Moonbabies got together in 1996 in their home city of Malmo, Sweden and have released an EP and two albums stateside. Praised by the American music press, one critic states "an impressive marriage of traditional indie pop and modern electronic production". (I am going to have to crib that quote the next time I am asked to describe the music on Grey's Anatomy). The new mini-album is dreamy and merits repeated listening. Hidden Agenda/Parasol, the bands label can always be counted on for great new music. Parasol started as a mail order catalog in the late 80s pushing truly pop records to a small but loyal group of fanatics and collectors via snail mail. Founder Geoff Merritt saw a future releasing records by and for his friends and the Parasol empire was born& He launched the Mud (home of Hum and Sarge) and Spur labels in the early 90's and The Hidden Agenda imprint was founded in 1996 --Ken Stringfellow, Bettie Serveert, Fonda, Poster Children, Kevin Tihista, Jose Gonzalez, The Soundtrack Of Our Lives and Moonbabies are all on the roster.
